I turned on the tv to see who was covering it: BBC 1, BBC News, Sky News, Sky living, ITV1, CNN and Euronews all had exactly the same tv feeds running....

Yeah I'm going to sit on the other side of the fence, especially from Morrissey, who along with a lot of other ignorant people making the same ignorant statements, really should get his facts straight before he opens his gob. Sounds to me like he is trying to be controvertial to try and raise his status a bit so he can save his music career, which seems to have taken a dive straight down the shitpan.

The Royal family costs the uk taxpayer about £40million per year according to various financial reports.

It's estimated that the UK INCOME from having them is £190million. So they make us £150million. kerching. I think they also have to pay tax on their own income? You can pretty much guarantee they all earn over the maximum earnings threshold - hello 50% tax rate.

Another good reason to keep them is the representation they offer the UK in terms of state visits. This is done as a head of state, not parliament or of a republic. This allows them to be apolitical (unbiased), whereas political heads of state can always be seen to be going to places with alterior motives.

Anyone who looks at the official royal website, or who takes the time to look at the list of things that the royal family do can plainly see they aren't lazy scroungers. Many of them do an immense amount of charitable work and raising profile for worthy causes. I hated Princess Diana, but you can't deny that by simply hugging a kid who had aids, she raised awareness of the disease on a global scale and all for the better.

Anyone who says that they have any political influence clearly hasn't read any UK history. We lopped off the head of one king who was taking the piss, and hence we have the democracy we have. If they really had influence, it would only take one bad move and they would be ousted by the whole country.

Just my opinion...

Nice post JP. I'm not a royalist by any means and only caught some of the highlights due to the seemingly unending coverage. Pomp and portense it was but we have something the US will never have (without buying it) and they are a great tourist attraction. :)
