If any one needs a very good codec i use the FFDshow and works great
Having played around with Video and dvd stuff.

Agreed VLC rocks for most stuff, CCCP is great too. The included ZOOM(v6 is free no longer, v5.5 is included) player works great for me for .MKV files in XP, Can't speak for Vista/7.
Haven't tried the multicore rendering option, no need, performance is happy, don't need the extra headache
