oh right, so do you need two graphics cards for it to work?

I thought multicore referred to your processors!

cpu superfunhappybonus. The cpu still has to feed the gpu with renderables, this helps speed the processs, ie might not improve top end fps, but may boost lower figures, like when busy busy...when you want it most.

It's the prepping of the materials and particles n ting for handoff to the gpu afaik that is now done on 2 cores, not one....but this initial offering is potentially buggy

so your crash on exit might be fixed, but by enabling this, it might cause crash in game. Suck it and see, it's why it's optional and disabled by default.

One of the engine tweaks that comes from l4d they mentioned at it's launch I think.

Answering to why you would need a codec pack:

(I might be wrong at some parts, sorry about that, these are very advanced stuff.)

Yeah, codecs are encoder/decoder algorithms, which you need for those kind of video/audio contents that were encoded by those codecs that your system hasn't got support yet. For example, XviD is a freeware, open-source codec based on MPEG-4 that gives you a quite fair video compression rate without losing noticeable picture detail, provided that you encode the video with good enough settings of course. Have you ever downloaded an episode of one of your fav TV series in a 350 MB video file? That's the quality I'm talking about. They are usually made with VirtualDub and the XviD codec. (Note that XviD doesn't compress audio. For that you will need to use some other codec like MP3 or AAC. Additionally, DivX is also a codec that happens to be a commercial branch of XviD.)

In order to be able to watch XviD-encoded videos, you will need that codec installed on your system. If you are lucky, you have it included in a codec pack of your choice, or you can download it individually from here. It's quite easy to install, and video editors will also support them immediately. (Codec packs do the same as well though.)

But to be more precise, as XviD is an MPEG-4 compatible codec (only the encoder part is the main point of its existance, making better quality MPEG-4 videos), you can also have eg. a video player software that has libavcodec implemented, which is a library of codecs including the MPEG-4 decoder, and you can use that for playing XviD-encoded videos instead of installing the XviD codec. But only if you want the decoder only. Such a video player is VLC.

As you've probably noticed already, Windows Media Player supports MP3 right away so don't worry about that.

And a big sorry for the way too detailed example. :)

As a final note, 'Xvid is superior to DivX in quality, speed and compatibility, but DivX isn't far behind in quality.' (rav0)

Actually, this is my final note: you have also probably heard about Quicktime, they have their own proprietary codec and a player supporting that codec, so I think you won't find that one included in a codec pack. (But see this.)

More information about codecs and XviD:

http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/xvid.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Anyway, perhaps try the K-Lite codec pack, it looks good enough.

I puke upon quicktime and it's bloated nonsense. real too.

I use the quicktime alternative that angryworf linked to and real alternative although real video is rarer and rarer(yay!) being usurped by flash video(boo!) I dont think I've needed real alternative on my latest pc build yet

if you use itunes *spit* you probably have quicktime installed anyway tho

Since I started useing VLC I've never had to worry about codecs. Simplicity at its best
