Radio Fester
Re: Radio Fester
moan fester's place ip lololol!!! =D
Re: Radio Fester
IE only corea, cos that is what the game uses
Rallfo, is the wmp stuff not overly complicated? you shouldnt need an updated wmp, nor need for external players. Basic embedded player w/ a link thrown at it is all you need. That will work for everyone and then you only need one landing page
Cos forcing tf2 players to alt-tab is a shootable offence...subjecting them to invisible players, wireframes, purple checkers....god knows what!
See here or here
also, you should not need a 192kbps cbr source...you should be able to pump anything into it and have the output reencoded at the correct bitrate. something like ezstream(one I've used, but I'm sure there's others) will take care of that for you

Re: Radio Fester
All these ideas are great, let's do them!
Llama, Fullmetal pick a time, get set up and entertain us
Toco, xexes if you're offering...
Corea having a normal webpage that'll work in other browsers for listening outside of tf2 is a good idea, cheers!
And what about our friends running tf2 on linux?
Plus eventually the flash version could show a live set list or other cool things (since ajax won't work in MSHTML) and has a lower resource footprint than wmp...
It seemed easier just to give people an initial choice of player (subsequently remembered).
I agree it's only a last resort but I'd like to keep it there as an option for people running tf2 in a virtual machine on mac osx on sparc with only xine installed that works except for every other tuesday
Server's currently running ices0 for the looping playlist with some hacked together python scripts that'll eventually do something with the metadata to make those set lists. I'll have a look at ezstream, thanks!
All input's greatly appreciated guys, keep performing and tuning in!

Well you would have thought so... But some people have multiple versions of the plugin installed and the older versions of the dll don't handle stream switching properly (certainly want st more recent than 5.1.52.* referenced in your code which suffers from the "chipmunk" bug among other things).Del wrote:Rallfo, is the wmp stuff not overly complicated? you shouldnt need an updated wmp, nor need for external players. Turn off your pagefile and it won't swap these resources out when you alt-tab! (solved the problem for me anyway...)Del wrote:Cos forcing tf2 players to alt-tab is a shootable offence...subjecting them to invisible players, wireframes, purple checkers....god knows what!

Yeah I'm trying to get the server set up to do cross-encoding from ogg so it'll work with Traktor. Might as well have the mixtapes already encoded at the correct bitrate though...Del wrote:also, you should not need a 192kbps cbr source...you should be able to pump anything into it and have the output reencoded at the correct bitrate. something like ezstream(one I've used, but I'm sure there's others) will take care of that for you

Re: Radio Fester
again overcomplicating. simple stream in a simple page. Old version used, cos well....if it aint broke..it's sufficient for the job it does, and if you have windows, you have it. if you work it on the back end and use a simple static client there's no need for stream switching.rallfo wrote: Well you would have thought so... as for linux?? fuckem(you??). it's this easy - tf2 and ie6/7 on windows = working and supported. tf2 and ie6/7 on Linux = world of pain, sadomasochists choice.
Please remember that ideally this is launched ingame, using the provided interface to the ie engine. Reinventing the wheel for the .0001% out there is pointless exercize imo. The KISS principle applies bigtime when it comes to ie/tf2.
Wrong approach. Not all people are in a position to, or even know how to, disable their page file. Not all gamers are techies remember. Works-for-me solutions dont apply to all...just go w/ whats' known to work.rallfo wrote: Turn off your pagefile and it won't swap these resources out when you alt-tab! ya, I had the icecast server on fester's place set up to do just that(work w traktor). why ogg tho? Nearly all sources are mp3.Rallfo wrote: Yeah I'm trying to get the server set up to do cross-encoding from ogg so it'll work with Traktor.

Re: Radio Fester
But it is... Otherwise our overlords at MS wouldn't release an updated player!Del wrote:Old version used, cos well....if it aint broke..

In fact MS and W3C both say that version 7 or later should be used for streaming
http://www.w3schools.com/media/media_playerref.asp
Which IMO is overly lenient considering we're on 11 (wmp7 can only handle certain old types of MP3 and the codec wasn't installed by default because MS didn't yet have the patent license from Frauenhofer).
I think keeping the extra options there for the 10% of people with slightly funny setups is worth the extra one-time mouseclick to get to the normal wmp version and we could also provide a choice of different bitrates there.
Latest version of Traktor Scratch Pro doesn't seem to do ogg without an expensive "mp3 broadcaster" add-on (neither me nor Jeffer seemed to have it), Virtual DJ and Serrato Scratch are ogg only as far as I know (again presumably the software would have to include the cost of a patent license), so need something server side to do the conversion. In any case need something to re-encode if there's a low bitrate option for people with slow internet...Rallfo wrote:why ogg tho? Nearly all sources are mp3.
Technically noone's supposed to use mp3 for streaming without paying patent royalties to Frauenhofer

I'm lost reading this topic, I could probably understand most of it if I took ages to go through it, but why bother lol

Re: Radio Fester
I know I'm new and don't carry much weight but I'm one of the 0.001/10%. I don't use WMP or IE. Both are resourse hogs and the main targets in their respective software fields to attacks. I don't and won't use them. What's wrong with having an xhtml compliant page?
Re: Radio Fester
Doesn't Steam use IE automatically?indivisible wrote:I know I'm new and don't carry much weight but I'm one of the 0.001/10%. I don't use WMP or IE. Re: Radio Fester
For reasons already mentioned. Not all people can be pleased all the time so, in general, an 80 / 20 rule is applied. Please 80% of the people all of the time = 100% of all who you wish to be happy is happy.. and a job well done too. This far out weighs extra time required to build the necessary things to make _everyone_ happy. What's wrong with having an xhtml compliant page?
I can understand not using IE or WMP. I don't directly use them either but that's not to say that they aren't used somewhere as uninstalling IE leads to other problems and issues down the road. As steam relies upon embedding IE you'll be hard pressed to stay clear of it if I'm not mistaken.
