Precalc anyone?
Re: Precalc anyone?
I see that "meh" has made it into the dictionary now.
To be honest, I don't mind using slang etc, so long as they are proper words.
Language is ever evolving and we speak considerably different to those even a 100 years ago, that's life, get over it.
However, I have a huge problem with that text speak bollocks, and I have a feeling its going to greatly contribute to the fall in literacy levels in the coming years.
I'm sure Bosco can back this up, and I've heard this from several other friends who work in colleges and schools, but students now think its perfectly acceptable to hand in assignments written in this garble.
Now I can fully understand textspeak for text messages, where you might have a limited number of characters, but in a fucking college essay, its unacceptable!

Yeah it happens all the time. I just get them to do it again with actual words. I have no problem with genuine spelling mistakes, but l8r and h8 and all the rest can go fuck off.LazyEagle wrote: However, I have a huge problem with that text speak bollocks, and I have a feeling its going to greatly contribute to the fall in literacy levels in the coming years.

Re: Precalc anyone?
Dead wrong on that one, the word "bath" as a noun has been there long before there were any Americans with bathtubs... its just used to generally describe any sort of object used specifically for bathing.Supernova wrote: On a serious note, if it's not the Queen's English, it's wrong
Nah, it just annoys me for some reason when dialects are ... wrong. I don't mind when the yanks or the aussies say "pants", or other such things which have a proper meaning. In my twisted view of "proper" English, English words like "bath" should be considered slang. The American word "bathtub" is much more accurate! Bath to me seems incorrect, just a shortened version of bathtub. (Infact, in all likelihood it used to be bathtub but because people used it so much, it got added to the oxford dictionary)
Anywho...
tl;dr: I have a wierd view of the English language.
I mean, it's all windy stairs. I'm not being funny.

yeah - and the City of Bath would be fucked if it had to rename itself to 'Bathtub' - just doesn't have quite the same ring to it!MountieXXL wrote:Dead wrong on that one, the word "bath" as a noun has been there long before there were any Americans with bathtubs... its just used to generally describe any sort of object used specifically for bathing.Supernova wrote: On a serious note, if it's not the Queen's English, it's wrong

Re: Precalc anyone?
Well, it was just an example that I was using from the wikipedia article on the differences between British English and American English (did some research to make sure I wasn't arguing something incorrect) - but just consider it as an example. I'm sure there are plenty of other words that make more sense in the American version which could take it's place.
And rename Bath to Bathtub? That's not what I was getting at at all
Place names and slang are completely different to correct words!
