The piano is one of the most popular and well known musical instruments in the world. You would be forgiven if you thought the piano has been around since time began, but of course this is not the case. There were many precursors to the piano, including the clavichord, the spinnet, the virginal, and of course the harpsichord. The latter was the the most popular keyboard instrument around until the piano came along. The mail difference between the harpsichord and the piano is that when you press a key on the harpsichord, a mechanism inside plucked the strings, and with the piano when you press a key a padded hammer hits the strings. The mail reason the piano took over from the harpsichord in terms of popularity was its dynamic versatility. No matter how hard you press a key on any of the piano's precursors, the volume of the note always remained the same. The piano, however is touch sensitive, so when you play softly, the volume is low, and the harder you press the keys the louder the sound gets. It is from this trait that the instrument gets its name. The full name for a piano is pianoforte, which means quiet-loud in Italian. Of course today it is almost always referred to as, simply, a piano.

It is interesting to note that the first public performance for solo piano took place in our very own Dublin in the mid 18th century.

There are many dangerous things in this world, but who would have thought cheese was one of them. There is, however, one cheese that I am aware of, that was considered so dangerous to eat the EU tried to ban its production altogether. This cheese is called casu marzu, and is produced on the Italian island of Sardinia. The precess of making it is very similar to pecorino cheese, except for one difference. Before its is wrapped up and stored away for maturation, it is left out in the sun for a day or two. Flies land it, and eat to their hearts content, before laying their eggs and promptly fucking off. When the cheese is matured, it is crawling with maggots, which traditionally are eaten with the cheese. The EU did not succeed in having it banned, however it is illegal to import it off the island, so if you want to try it, you'll have to go to Sardinia!

A man staggered out of a pub in Waterford one night very drunk. Realising he was hungry he bought a couple of crubeens on his way home. He scoffed them and went to bed without washing his hands. Anyone who has seen crubeens will know that they are mostly fat, and eating them with your fingers will leave you very sticky indeed. As he didn't wash his hands before going to bed, when he woke, all the fat on his fingers, and mouth had congealed, and he was unable to move them, or speak. His wife, thinking he had had a stroke during the night immediately called for an ambulance! As soon as the ambulance men arrived they saw him and realised what had happened, leaving both the man and his wife feeling very foolish indeed.

:?
This is completely true! He was a friend of my Dadd's and he bought the crubeens in Mary Kate's Kitchen which used to be up on Ballybricken.

Most, if not all of us, will know what the Irish flag looks like, a tricolour of green, white and orange. It has been the official flag of the Republic of Ireland since 1919, however, it was first introduced to the people of Ireland by, you guessed it, a Waterford man by the name of Thomas Francis Meagher in the mid 1800's,and it was he who explained its meaning. The green section was to represent the native Irish people, predominantly Catholics. The orange section was to represent the British supporters of William of Orange, who had settled mostly in the northern part of Ireland in the 17th century (Northern Ireland did not exist as a country at this time),predominantly Protestants. The white section in the middle was to represent a lasting peace between the two peoples, a truly noble vision which, unfortunately, to this day has not been realised.
