First of all activate Snap healing. It's in the Multiplayer tab - Advanced - "Medic gun continues healing ....", if you haven't done so. That way you don't have to keep holding down the mouse button.

To be honest if that option didn't exist I doubt I'd play medic. As an avid smoker of whatever I can find having to keep my finger down so much is a no no

Many tips have already been mentioned, but I'll try to continue the list.

• Welcome to the world of Medics, Bosco! As a Medic you play the God: you decide between who stays alive and who not.
  
  Seriously, you can't keep everyone alive. If your healing speed is shared between your teammates, they all end up dead very fast. So make choices (as Advent said).
• Also, with the Blutsauger you are a powerful battle Medic, you can kill any class.
  
  Actually that requires skills, and you better use it only when retreating. (Like when the Spy uses his revolver for retreating.)
• Being a Medic also means that your team will start to love you, you easily get to the top of the score list, and get some dominations too.
  
  But that's only true if you don't die too many times. Being on the frontline is very dangerous, which is why playing the Medic is both fun and challenging. I usually heal the skilled players and my Medic mates so they can heal me back when I'm badly damaged.
• You have magical powers that no other class can possess. You can turn the game with it from a losing position to a winning one.
  
  As kab said, the Kritzkrieg can charge up 25% faster than the Medigun, greatly increasing your chances of not losing Uber. It's also a very offensive tool, having the enemy team dead is far better than 8 seconds of invulnerability after which you die instantly. Except when killing close-range Sentry guns of course...
• And finally, I love giving invuln to Pyros.
