I'm Dutch, and anime/manga/good comics are scarce,
the ones I have are ordered.
Try Cowboy bebop,
and death note.

I know of them 2, dont like the look of Cowboy but i heard Death Note is a very successful manga and anime.

Re: Comic books and Manga
I can't tell if he's deliberately confusing machinima and anime or not
As for cowboy bebop, calling yourself an anime fan without having seen cowboy bebop is like calling yourself a stoner without ever smoking weed.
Madness.

Re: Comic books and Manga
I have distanced my self from anime and manga simply because I never found a logically plausible, realistic story. It was all "Babes" and "Whacky" humour that I did not realise I was supposed to laugh half the time. I lost interest, although thats not to say there is no such thing as a good one. Kino no Tabi/Kino's Journey was very good. Only one I could honestly recommend.
Marvel and DC oddly enough seem even weirder to me. While anime knows it's off the wall, M&DC take themselves so seriously about aliens and men in leotards who wear their "pants" on the outside. Also, the main Spider-man books are actually (pardon my french) shit. Parker talks like a five year old, read up if you want to see for yourself.
If you like noir or heavy reads I can recommend however are;
Watchmen by Alan Moore. A bugger of a read but it is so dark and gritty you will love it. Great if you like film Noir.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller. The movie is based off this I think (I have not yet seen it yet) but again is so dark, moody and unlike batman in every sense its brilliant.
If you can find it:
Kino no Tabi by Keiichi Sigsawa. A rare find, and not a comic/graphic novel, its a light novel but still fantastic.
I hear Maus by Art Spiegelman is good too and I have plans to order it soon.
Hope you have a good time in London.

Re: Comic books and Manga
I watched Akira and was amazed and confused at the same time.
Then I watched Legend of The Overlord and decided it was all just toooooo fucked up
Studio Ghibli stuff is good though
