So what would be your tips for playing TF2?
I'll start.
1) You can change class as many times as you like during one life as long as your in the spawn room no matter how many peole you have killed or how long you have been alive.
So if your a sniper hanging back around the spawn room and the enemy are pushing towards you, dont get out your chomp chomp, just nip in the spawn room, change class, come out and kill them then nip back in a change back to the sniper......(please

)

2) I found as a new player several months ago the best way to learn TF2 was to play medic therefore fulfilling a vital role for your team, while being able to watch how other clases go about their business and learn from how they played.

4. Don't smoke Merlin and then play tf2 or you'll spend 20 minutes talking to a spray of a Pyro which is a waste of time for your team.

1) - DO smoke merlin and spend 20 minutes talking to a spray as it makes you awesome and confuses the fuck out of the opposition.
2) - TF2 is a class based game with certain team objectives. It's true that many classes are versatile and fulfill multiple roles, but never ignore your job!
Soldiers - You are the worker bees, whether it's pushing the enemy back on the bridge in two fort or capping a control point on gravel pit you should be where the action is. You are good against all classes so get out there and fight.
Demo - You work a lot like the soldier, though you have a slightly better defensive capacity. In specific situations you are the best class to clear out enemy sentries so if you know what you are doing make yourself available to medics.
Scout - You have two roles, harassing key players and capping/capturing. If you can grab the intel, do it, and get it back nice and fast. If you can't get by the enemy defences let your team know what they are up against so they can clear it out and get you in. The other side of your job is to take out dangerous/important players. If you see a heavy/medic on the way in to your base, ambush the medic and focus on him. Even if the heavy kills you the medic is dead, and your team can handle the rest. Same for spies, keep your eyes open and move around, the scout can be a better spy detterent than a pyro.
Sniper - Should be obvious, but your job is to provide covering fire, to supress the enemy and make them afraid to leave their base. Though it may be boring your main target will always be enemy snipers first. Clear them and your team and move forward and you can freely attack other enemies.
Medics - We all know this one. Heal, heal, heal. Always keep moving and watching your back as you are prime target for spies. Remember you are the teams medic, not just the heavys. If you aren't healing at least three people at once damnit you're not trying.
Spies - Similiar to the scout, but more refined. You take out key players and positions. You frustrate the medics so they can't build ubers, you sap sentries so your team can make important ground, and you take out powerful foes with a single stab. You are a jerk, get to it.
Engineer - You are a support class, so use the full range of your abilities when you can. Obviously your sentry is going to be your main focus, but a dispenser in the field is a life save against pyros and handy for ammo. Get your gear up and keep an eye on it.
Pyro - Strike fear into the enemy team, rush groups trying to cap and scatter them like bowling pins. Ambush and suprise, strafe and burn. Nothing disrupts an attack quicker than a pyro dropping into the middle of it. Also, spy check, they fear you.
Heavy - You are big, slow and stupid. You are also totally awesome and hilarious. Find a medic, get into corridors, short distances to enemies and such, and avoid open ground. You are death on tiny legs to infantry and when ubered everyone will scarper.

As a soldier, rocket jump everywhere, it's so much faster, doesn't really hurt you much - and besides, there's HP packs and medics everywhere.
