Bike Riding gone wrong!

I've been catching up with an old baseball friend from my home town. Turns out he decided to go on a bike ride round Derwent Valley (close to Sheffield).
10 mins into the adventure and one wheelie too many and crash. Bad accident. One layed out guy in agony with no mobile reception. Here's a picture:
In case you are wondering. It's not trick photography. He isn't wearing his show at a funny angle... and yes the bend that may look like an akle is where the break his. His foot is still in his shoe as it should be.
OUCH!!!! Mind you I still laughed my ass off just cos it didn't happen to me but it's still bad. 9 days in hospital, 1 metal plate and 6 pins with 2 wire lines in his leg sounds like absolute agony.
Here's an xray of the break.
By all accounts in worse cases some people have loss their foot due to lack of circulation and consider a friend had to ride away to get a mobile signal and then wait for the paramedic he's exceptionally lucky.
