Grumpy Old rants

Anyone watch BBC Breakfast this morning?

There was a section on the wonderful new government initiative banning the display of cigarettes at counters. Thats really going to do a lot of good isn't it  .

I don't have too much of a problem with do gooders trying to make people healthier - I'm horribly unfit and well aware of it, and many of us could probbably do with looking after ourselves a little better.

What I do object to is people lecturing me when they should be far more concerned with their own health issues.

There was a spokeswoman from the British Heart Foundation saying what a wonderful thing the ban was, how much it would help stop people smoking, and basically referring to smokers like we are mass murderers.

I don't think I'm unkind in saying that this woman was rather more than overweight.

With clinical obesity being one of the fastest rising health problems in the UK, and potentially costing the NHS (i.e. the UK taxpayer) billions of pounds in as small a timespan as ten years time, perhaps this self righteous fat fuck should look in the mirror and get some exercise before she gets on her box and starts having a pop at smokers!

grumpy old rant over.

Ah Johnimus, you've touched on a very interesting question here.

Mainly, the trade off between the cost of smoking related illnesses and the cost of elderly care, and fuck it, I'll make the link between giving up smoking and putting on weight, because its a documented fact.

It's something all of us smokers have to think about. Do we A) smoke and take our chances with cancer and heart disease, perhaps cutting our life span by 15 to 20 years, or do we B) give it all up, and hopefully live until we're no longer able to take care of ourselves.

B) only works if you really abstain from booze aswell, and really watch what you eat. Now I don't know about you, but I'd find life an awful lot tougher without booze, smoke and tasty food!

Agreed Johnimus a lot of these people who are anti smokers or anti anything should be taking a look in the mirror smoking is a choice of the public not the government...

But in the end of the day we are here for a good time not a long time

Gotta agree there Fester. What ever makes you happy will probably keep you alive longer than stopping the vices that you actually enjoy.

I was thinking about this today and it's a pretty nasty strike all round. I doubt it'll have any effect on the smokers nor those that may start smoking. We will do want we damn well please.

It has the potential to reduce a shops turnover which has an impact of our economy.

I'd rather those do-gooders actually say "Thank You" for the health service the taxes provide and fuck off and pick on the criminals that have far too many rights!! I'm sure the day will come and it will be a long time coming but you reap what you sow and reduction in smoking and drinking will effectively reduce the revenue used in NHS upkeep.

I actually think there was something about banning on the counter advertising (all the mats on the counters of newsagents used to be ads for ciggies), but some shops keep their smokes behind the counter and not in machines.
