For me,

Its not that I didnt like Linux (used Ubuntu) when I was using it, it was just too much of a pain in the arse.

To much hassle to get things to work. Too much typing and knowing 1000's of commands and all their sufffixs. Too much searching on forums to fins out how to look in my HDD and get the graphics drivers to work. It was too much bother when I had a perfectly good OS already setup to how I liked it. Plus I can play all my games on it.

People say that Linux is quicker to boot into and for your programs to load, but if you look after windows and dont bog it down and keep it clean its only seconds slower. In any case it gives me a good excuse to hit the power button and go make some toast!

The memory footprint may be lower as well but thats not really much use when I cant run my memory intesive apps (read games!).

Windows 7 looks ok. I havent really read much into it. They really need to drop legacy support and start from scratch though. Just anounce that in 3 years time we are going to release a new OS. in the announcement they can state that NO old apps will work with it (maybe an emulator aka XP64's 32 bit emulator). They can then create a very clean OS, close all the security loop holes, make it stable and still retain the feel of a windows machine.

It would be a huge step for them, and would cost them millions as the uptake would initially be slow but its not like MS is short of a few bob! But as long as they kept releasing betas and what not then softwareshould be able to be developed to take advantage of this.

Well its International Handicap Day today, so why not give a handicapped OS a chance?
I mean, it's all windy stairs. I'm not being funny.

Ok I installed the beta. so far Interface looks just like Vista. Requires 13.5 GB of Hard drive space....

File browsing is of course Explorer and it seems like everything else is. Almost like I'm always on the internet.

Win 7 is using Direct3D 10 with a fall back to 9(At a performance hit of course). I forgot what they actually called it but there will not be directx 11 at first. Also they are claiming DirectX 10 will work with older cards on Se7en but will not be very efficient because it will be emulating.

The best and easiest way to try is to use virtual software. Free and easy to use VirtualBox The drawback is you wont get games to run well if at all. It'll give you a nice insight into the prog any way.

I agree most if not all linux distro are not for the faint hearted. There is more typing required and it's not too intuitive either but then marry that up with how long you've been sat and spoilt infront of windows and I'm sure most will be proficient in most aspects of linux. It's only a matter of time.

I've been playing with ubuntu via virtualbox in seamless mode and it's pretty steady and stable. Even managed to remove OO2.4 and install OO3. Although it's my kind of thing I like. Now I have office on my windows PC via linux without annoying windows. Win win if you ask me.

No to linux. It may increase your knowledge of computers, but it'll decrease your productivity.

As for windows 7...it's just vista w/o a lot of the bloat, esp in the kernel. That tho, is a Good Thing
7 uses a technology called WARP (oh the irony) for emulating GPU calls on cpu, so even shitboxes can have aero-ishness. Prob as a result of the healthy vista-capable class action lawsuit, but no harm.

xming+putty for your xwindows on windows love via other emu solutions, eg vmware
