I'll post my daily xp setup because it's what I use most and nobody wants to see 12 separate desktops (6 os x dual screen).
While I understand the hatred of clutter I can't understand getting rid of
all your icons. I use them way too often.
I also use taskbar folders and pin the frequently handy progs to the start menu for quick keyboard access.
I do clean installs every 2-5 months so it's constantly different. Anyway here's mine, 20" and 19" as it is now:

Thats what I do. Anything else thats useful gets toolbarred at the bottom; I much prefer the single click method to open stuff up, but obviously there isnt room to stick all the games down there!

Here's my work desktop. Cluttered but in a reasonable order (well I know they are).
I tend to increase my toolbar height and make a "My computer" toolbar to allow fast drive access. It negates the need to create shortcuts on the desktop. Just show them as large icons and dont show the title and you are there.

Personal desktop:
WinXP with the Royale Black theme previously mentioned, running emerge desktop instead of explorer and plasma from KDE on cygwin. Complete with silly holiday slideshows =)
Work machines don't normally have GUIs... Does that beat your black wallpaper Del?
Yeah I have emacs, kate and visual studio open. VIM is the editor of the beast!

I have to confess, I had a weak moment and set a desktop background on a lappy the other day, and win7 box still has default wallpaper. still no icons tho, nor gadgets.

Yeh I don't use a huge number of programs, I've got a few pinned to the start menu, several quick launch icons, and a very handy keyboard with many macro buttons.

Email, iTunes, web browser, msn all at the easy touch of a button, as well as a handy volume control etc. It's great to be able to skip tracks on iTunes whilst working on a document and not having to alt-tab between windows, a flash of a finger sufices

Off topic - The Blackadder complete boxed set. If I'm feeling down nothing cheers me up better than watching it. Well that and maybe a bit of Jackass
