this is a press release by the company that is making profit of the power plant also in the past they coverd up lots of minor and even moderate errors and mistakes at all their plants so i would not trust them.
japanese goverment evacuated over 170.000 people from an area 20km around the reactor.
also have started giving out jodine pills as an counter measure to nuclear fallout.
second reactor may undergo a meltdown in the moment since they cant cool it anymore...

Just heard from a press release, they are now asking people to evacuate parts of Tokyo nearest the plant.

They've asked residents near the "Tokyo Electric power plant" to evacuate not an evacuation of Tokyo city. The sea water has been treated with Boron. Boron disrupts nuclear chain reactions.

It seems the reactor that farted was due to be decommissioned some time in the next few months and the 2nd and 3rd reactors were to go in a year or two which is unfortunate to say the least. One of the reactors at the second plant has had its backup cooling fail as-well.
If 'independent analysts' are to be believed in the event there was a meltdown it would be more akin to 3 mile island than Chernobyl as the reactors have been shut down and aren't actively generating a fission chain reaction. I also heard someone say they would hope the outer containment would hold if the reactor dropped out of its pressure vessel so the fuel wouldn't hit the water table with the Hollywood style china syndrome.
Incidentally all 3 reactors at plant 1 have had to let off steam because with no coolant circulation the coolant that is in the reactors has started to evaporate and increase the pressure in the pressure vessels.

The Japanese Government has requested the immediate assistance of Avenging and Smokedef to coordinate the teams trying to stabilise their nuclear facilities.
Reports that they are on route to the quake hit area are unconfirmed.

oooo will they be doing it like mythbusters, where the take 1 reactor each and see who can fix it best-est?
And on a serious note casualty estimates keep rising....some of the video of the wreckage of towns on bbc news is scary.
