Ah now Bbloke, the list of decent sequels is getting bigger and bigger, but I will agree that there is way too much milking going on!

To prove my point, here are some sequels that were better than the original. I'm sure I am missing some so please add to this list if you have any more.

Superhero movies
Spiderman 2
The Dark Knight
Superman 2

Horror films
Dawn of the Dead (original Romero version)
Evil Dead 2

Sci Fi
Wrath of Khan
Aliens
Terminator 2
The Empire Strikes Back

Other
Godfather pt 2
Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (can't believe I nearly forgot that one)
James Bond films (while Dr. No is a great movie, there were plenty of the Connery ones which were way better)

I don't mind a decent sequel its the piss poor remakes of the originals that I hate.
Worst ever remake was Psycho it was a frame by frame copy no imagination put into it at all. closely followed by the Queen Latifah version of Taxi.
And now Let the right one in is barely cold and its already being remade as Let me in.

I hear that the version of The Taking of Pelham 123 released last year was brutal too!

Now the original, with Walter Mathau and Robert Shaw, is a great movie altogether!

Ah Lazy you are probably right about the sequels list but I'm old hat and rarely swayed in for sequels. I watch them for the sake of them but fear most don't come close to the first. My exceptions would be:

Alien vs Aliens
Aliens was just different from the start and as a action sci-fi I considered it a pretty good hit. I even have the RPG board game!

Batman Begins & Dark Knight
Both class but the Dark Knight just ticked all the boxes.

I enjoyed all Spiderman films but the last was scraping the bottom of the barrel. The first was ground breaking the second I'm having trouble remembering! ;)

As for Star Wars.... the first and last films all the way.. even those annoying ewoks... I was never a fan of Empire Strikes Back.

As milking franchises go.. there are the two biggies - Star Trek and James Bond. I've never been a true trekky although I enjoyed The Next Generation but not really followed it. The last film however was a breath of fresh air. Same Star Trek but with a certain crisp action-packed wrapper to it. The last two bond films were pretty reasonable but then I guess film making skills and effects have changed so much over the years.

Oh god remakes.... I doubt they will ever come close to the originals as we see them but the young peeps that the films are intended for thing they are great.. What gets me is the way Hollywood believe they can improve on most anything others have done and generally right royally fuck it up. Such fantastic Japanese films like The Ring, One Missed Call, The Grudge were all butchered and bastardise for a somewhat moronic (most present company exempt) american audience. I don't scare easily but the Japanese version of The Ring last thing at night just plain got me and they waited til the end. Brilliance.

Excuse my ramblings.. was a hell of a late night.. had a late night visit to A&E (not me though).

Thankfully they announced earlier today that they are scrapping the fourth installment and giving the franchise a reboot making it darker and grittier.

They are also moving Peter Parker back to high school, so we'll probably have to sit through another origin movie!

Seriously though, does Spiderman need to be darker? I wouldn't think so myself, and the I would have always associated the character with witty banter as opposed to dark storylines.

Batman, on the other hand, deserves the darker stories to fit the character.

Not to sure on how they will make it darker per se but I'm guessing they'll probably make Uncle Ben's (the person not the rice) death more graphic and Peter exacting revenge on the perpetrator too.

Spiderman wasnt a 'dark' comic so I can only imagine a grubbier feeling Spiderman movie to be a bit meh and shit.

There's a new Karate Kid on the horizon though....

Jackie Chan are teh SERIOUS.
Happy to be here.

Oh god.. Not more Spiderman. LOL. Marvel must be raking it in... shame for Stan Lee though.. even though he gets a cameo in most of the films. I'm getting the feeling there is going to be a sudden drop in entertainment from these comic book to movie adaptations. Well more than seen in previously films.

IIRC we've had:

Xmen 1, 2, 3 & Wolverine
Iron Man with the sequel soon to be on it's way
The Avengers are coming too
The Hulk (shite shite shite)
The Incredible Hulk (more like it!)
Elecktra (WTF was going on there!)
The Punisher (the who?)
The Fantastic Four
Daredevil
