octupus steals camera

A cheeky octopus grabbed a diver's video camera as he was filming underwater -- and then scarpered.

Victor Huang had been filming the eight-armed bandit off the coast of Wellington, New Zealand, when it suddenly reached out with a tentacle and grabbed at him.

The 31-year-old initially thought he was being attacked and tried to get back up to the surface. But he soon realised the kleptomaniac was only after his bright blue underwater snapper.

After grabbing the £350 video camera, the rubbery robber darted off, leaving Victor chasing him to get his favourite gadget back. It took five minutes of frantic swimming to catch up with the aquatic crook.

The diver then held out his speargun in a bid to distract the octopus, and it worked, when it grabbed at the gun with several tentacles Victor used the chance to free his camera from the crook's mouth.

However, the octopus then refused to let go of the gun and was carried around for several minutes as Victor continued swimming.

Speaking of the incident our victim of crime said: "I honestly believe that it saw the bright blue digital camera and went 'oh I need that', you know?"

But the best bit about this story has to be that the video camera was filming the entire time -- meaning we get to see that while the octopus makes a good thief, it is a woeful cameraman. Keep reading to check out the video.
