I'm not going to touch Vista for at least a couple of years until the driver issues are sorted.

XP still plays games faster and at the moment there aren't enough Vista only games coming out to justify it.

Aditionally I think that there are still major issues with DX10, where current graphics cards (and I'm talking DX10 capable cards) won't be able to be updated when they release a new version?

Was also reading that Microsoft are talking about releasing windows 7 in about a years time? YEAH RIGHT!!!! Make that 7 years!!!

OK, driver issues in vista are largely only on the 64 bit version, 32 bit seems fine. All recent hardware should be supported and I certainly haven't had any troubles.

From the first post, xp is dx9 (9.0c is the latest iirc) and vista uses (can use) dx10. The latest dx10 cards should be able to support upcoming dx versions, I know for instance that the nVidia 8 series is having an update soon which enables it to use hardware acceleration on particle effects thanks to the PhysX system.

Also, if you've been using Ubuntu, then why not stick with that? I've played TF2 in ubuntu with no problems, although the steam chat didn't work too smoothely with friends.

The latest version of windows won't be out for a while yet, and will likely contain a lot more things that nobody needs.

Vista things like superfetch are really useful, but killer on lower end pc's - just installing vista you're signing away a whole bunch of memory... so think specs before what to install!

Also there's the price issue.. because I am at a university studying a computer science course I got vista business free from msdnaa, but you might have to pay for it!

I'm with johnimus on this, xp for the easy life. None of the Vista Nice Things are worth it imo, anything new that vista does, that you think you need, can be done with 3rd party software on xp as it is, even compiz stylee 3d desktopperydoo.

why not have the best(??) of both worlds, dual boot, decide for yourself which works best for you

xpsp3 is coming rsn and apparently has some further (small) performance improvements, whether it'll benefit games I dunno tho.

For the last few years I was running 2k3 24/7 w/ a couple of tweaks to make it xpish. Sooo stable, trouble free. I'm only running xp now cos I was in a place with dodgy power and the boot times were killing me, so I went for a quick fresh xp install to get me running quicker.

I tried Vista and dropped it like a hot potato. Simple, stupid things pissed me off like audio stutter when doing network intensive ops, the constant disk thrashing, UA-fucking-C and the fact that there was, and still is, no hardware OpenGL support for my gfx, so no q3. Oh I could rant on....*deep breath*

Ooohhhhhhhmmmm
