That's exactly why Obama went so hardcore on BP. It seems to have become standard for oil companies to blow off these spills, and the money it takes to fix the problem. BP now faces our congress, we will see what happens.

Re: BP should hire this guy for PR
I've been following this quietly for a while now. I'm unimpressed with America generally. Thats not to say that I'm not sympathetic - it's a huge environmental disaster for the US, but the world as well, given the impact on wildlife and the economic impact on the communities affected. But I think going all hardcore at this point is way overdue, and somewhat ironic given the US history with oil and it's unquenching thirst for 'black gold'.
The reliance on fossil fuels has been known about for a good long time now, and America in particular has a very poor record with it's consumption - I'm refering to pitiful rates of tax and vastly underefficient gas guzzling cars with unneccesarily large engines. If taxes on oil / fuel had been set high as it is in many other parts of the world then there would have been substantial pressure placed on oil companies to start developing alternative fuels much earlier. Oil companies would still make gigantic profits from the oil, and would still then be able to profit from the technologies produced from research into green fuels.
That's not to say that America are the only guilty ones. Developing countries also use masses of the stuff.
The point is that whilst oil companies, fat cat businessmen, politicans, policy makers and even the safety personnel who give the ok to the methods used for drilling, inspecting the quality of the engineering and those who assess the possible environmental impact all get rich (don't tell me that there are no dirty backhanders and incentives to push certain decisions through more quickly or minus some key details), the rest of the world ends up suffering.
The developed world should have been making sure that significant funding was made available for research into aleternative green fuels a long time ago. That way we could be doing what we should be doing - being world leaders in promoting environmentally friendly, renewable energy sources that don't cause the kind of disaster we have seen.
BP are at fault, yes. However, they are being made a very cheap scapegoat by a particularly greedy country who should know better. Shame on you America.
(if anyone feels like having a pop at the UK - I've got the soap box nice and warm for you
