I don't get the animosity towards social networking, maybe you are doing it wrong 
it can be a really good thing, i use facebook.. i get to see how my friends are doing on the other side of the country, how their kids are doing, how their business is going etc.. i have friends who do a lot of gigs and i get to see when and where they are etc..
most people i know don't post what they had for breakfast and drivel like that (i know thats the cliche of social networking)
