speed of light broken

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/scie ... tists.html
Spoiler: show
The science world was left in shock when workers at the world's largest physics lab announced they had recorded subatomic particles travelling faster than the speed of light – a feat that Einstein said was impossible.
If the findings are proven to be accurate, they would overturn one of the pillars of the Standard Model of physics, which explains the way the universe and everything within it works.
Einstein's theory of special relativity, proposed in 1905, states that nothing in the universe can travel faster than the speed of light in a vacuum.
But researchers at the CERN lab near Geneva claim they have recorded neutrinos, a type of tiny particle, travelling faster than the barrier of 186,282 miles (299,792 kilometres) per second.
The results have so astounded researchers that American and Japanese scientists have been asked to verify the results before they are confirmed as a discovery.

Antonio Ereditato, spokesman for the researchers, said: "We have high confidence in our results. We have checked and rechecked for anything that could have distorted our measurements but we found nothing.
"We now want colleagues to check them independently."
A total of 15,000 beams of neutrinos were fired over a period of 3 years from CERN towards Gran Sassoin Italy, 730km (500 miles) away, where they were picked up by giant detectors.
Light would have covered the distance in around 2.4 thousandths of a second, but the neutrinos took 60 nanoseconds – or 60 billionths of a second – less than light beams would have taken.
Scientists agree if the results are confirmed, that it would force a fundamental rethink of the laws of physics.
John Ellis, a theoretical physicist at the European Organization for Nuclear Research who was not involved in the experiment, said Einstein's theory underlies "pretty much everything in modern physics".
The theory, which helps explain everything from black holes to the Big Bang, "has worked perfectly up to now", he said.
According to the law that energy is equal to mass multiplied by the speed of light squared, or E=mc2, firing an object faster than light would require an infinite amount of energy.
Proof that something had travelled faster would pose major questions about our understanding of the laws of nature because, for example, something that travels faster than light would in theory arrive before it left.

Mind = Blown on that one.
Happy to be here.

yup, looks like the fundamental laws of physics as we've known them may no longer apply. everyone from newton to einstein to hawking could be wrong
but it could be decades before this has any kind of social impact on us, and ive no idea how it'll effect modern science if this is verified

also keep watching the skies.... because a satellite might land on your head

http://news.sky.com/home/article/16075394" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Spoiler: show
A defunct six-ton satellite is hurtling towards earth and is expected to crash within the next 24 hours, but experts have no idea where it will land.

Nasa has said the odds of a piece of the Uars debris striking a person is about one in 3,200.
The agency insists most of the 20-year-old probe will burn up in the atmosphere and that the debris will most likely fall into an ocean or land in an uninhabited region of Earth.
The probe is being tracked by radar stations and experts around the world.
Flight Lieutenant Mike Farrington and his team at RAF Fylingdales have been monitoring the 35ft long satellite since its launch.
He says the tumbling probe is causing tracking difficulty because of its shape, size and speed.
"There's a great deal of uncertainty over where it will re-enter. Due to the irregular size and shape of this object it's impossible to say.
"These things move at about 7.5 kilometres (4.6 miles) per second in space and something moving at that speed is very difficult to predict.
"We've got some world class analysts here who've been working round the clock.
"But it's impossible for anyone using any of the resources anywhere across the globe to actually predict when and where this object will land."

Scientists expect up to 26 pieces - with a combined mass of about 540kg - to survive the fiery re-entry.
Launched in 1991, the satellite has been monitoring chemicals in the atmosphere, slowly losing altitude since completing its mission in 2005.
This satellite has caused a scare already. In 2010 it forced the International Space Station into a collision avoiding manoeuvre.
Nasa said that in 50 years of space travel no one has ever been hurt by falling debris.
But cosmic junk is not rocket science. This is a case of watch this space. Literally.

Yep.. unless it cures my hairtrigger problem I'm not interested.

I'm amaze on how they could possible measure speed on a subatomic level! Amazing!

Freaky how much he sounds like him. Very good. Also, I thought the fundamental laws of physics were broken long ago with the string theory. Pretty amazing though, that they can document speeds that fast.

Nope C was and probably still is the speed limit. If the result can be backed up by other instruments it might be true.
