YouTube hit 'fainting kittens' suffer from a rare and tragic condition
The internet video footage shows the cats, Charlie and Spike, unable to control themselves and flipping over on to the floor.
It has been viewed more than 500,000 times but vets say the pair have a serious neurological condition called myotonia congenita, also called ‘fainting goat’ syndrome.
Spike died of respiratory problems on Tuesday.
In the video the pair are seen trying to explore but suddenly hurl themselves to the ground. They are unable to run or jump but otherwise appear normal.
Vet Pete Wedderburn said some cats and breeds of dogs have had the condition.

‘But it’s very rare and I’ve never come across this myself. It’s a genetic disorder hence the pair of them in the same litter having it,’ he added.
‘The condition causes stiffness in the oesophagus which makes if difficult for the animals to eat or breath, hence one of the kittens dying from respiratory problems, which is very sad. Sadly there really isn’t much that can be done for animals with this condition.’
Myotonia congenita causes muscle cells to have too much sodium but not enough chloride. This leads to abnormal repetitive electrical signals from the brain, such as those associated with being startled.
