Setting up a Web Cam Stream - Any Advice ?

Post by CAMBO » Sun Sep 04, 2011 12:23 pm

hi guys, looking to set up a live stream but its not something ive ever done before.

:oops: ( nothing kinky ) :oops:

Any suggestions and ideas about my best route ?

Im going to be streaming from about 100 feet in the air and want to catch a shot of the surroundings in as much detail as poss.
The area is lit at night. Not fussed about audio.

Thought i may be better going down the security cam route.
would be better if i can have the camera pan left and right, but not vital.
i can host the live stream myself.
the feed will be open to the public on a property website.

This is a picture shot from the same location - i would b grateful for any suggestions. :thanks:

A lot of the security cameras I've seen are much lower resolution than that camera shot and require the camera to be much closer (or an expensive telescopic lens). You'll be able to see somebody stealing a car but even if they were swimming in the pool you're unlikely to get a good shot of somebody's face.

If that's not a problem, try to aim for a wired closed circuit system which you can then feed into a computer. I've seen several wireless systems set up and had to fiddle with one a couple of weeks back that operate on the 2.4ghz spectrum. If you're in a block of flats it can interfere with your (or somebody else's) wifi signal. Although routers have the ability to select an appropriate channel they didn't detect the wireless camera signal and wifi wouldn't work at all. This can be even more of a pain when some countries have a more limited bandwidth for the wireless spectrum than others.

Id guess you will have to setup a domain name and ip association first.
I use free DNS with an auto updating service to update my ip Vs domain name ( its free ), Although if you have a static ip it's much easier. Im guessing you have a registered domain as you own a company. Then all you do is use any free or paid for streaming software and config your gateway to allow traffic on the port you choose to stream out of.

Here is a very simple overview of the basics
http://www.commercialnetworkservices.co ... webcam.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/how_to ... m_internet" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As to the hardware you have to ask if you want it in or outside / wired or wireless / movable from the web.

Thanks Jase - it is more of a question of hardware i suppose.

It will be fixed on the balcony outside although i have a covered balcony at the same spot.
As Nova picked up - it needs to be clear from my height and distance.
Might get you to pop over and do the install for me.

Im guessing someone we know has done something on this level before though.

some companies host your webcam for free, not 100% sure which is the best but i know a fella hosted some images of himself to a couple friends through one of these sites
