Because http://www.festersplace.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; points to a specific IP whereas festersplace.com points to the domain hosting company. Different IPs so the protocol is needed.

It works for my also but i suspect you acces a saved copy of the webpage from a cached copy within the O/S temporary Internet Folder for downloaded content and cookies.
