Yeah the rifle is good, but I think more in campaign mode than vs. Its useful because it goes through multiple enemies at the same time - ideal for those sections of no mercy when your confined in a tight corridor, and when you have the time to pick off zombies one by one. However, in vs I think it's less effective as you don't get time to aim much - and if you are aiming you can't see whats going on round you as much i.e. some sneaky player pouncing on you from the side or back (remember the hunter makes no noise unless crouched).

Personally I take the uzi and then the upgraded machine gun (m3? m5?). The shotgun reload time is prohibitive, and I don't find anything less satisfying than spinning round and round with the crosshair at headheight, decapitating zombies in a flurry of bullets.

Of course, this might have more to do with my lack of skills with the rifle and shotty...

Rotfl, the last scout update they billed the new gun as 'we found what people want is a very slow loading gun that only fires 2 shots..."

Is the game like properly scary? When I first played Doom 3 I was jumping at the slightest noise

Jonny, if you found Doom3 scary, then chances are you'll find L4D scary, I know I do!

Of course the fact that I work myself into hysterics while playing, doesn't help matters and only increases the intensity for me (and I hope the other players involved).

Actually, I've just reminded myself that I got a bit carried away yesterday during a game, and ended up shouting "Bunny? BUNNY? BUNNNYYYY!!! NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!" or something similar!

the best thing is the open mike on it though, which means that without the nbeed to press a button, the rest of the players get to hear my squeals and cries!
